“The world and everything in it is unplanned accident, existence is meaningless; the past is irrelevant; nothing matters.”
Define the motion in the house today.
Unplanned accident: something that happens without planning it to happen
Existence is meaningless: This is due to the fact that everyone is going to die no matter what. No one is immortal!
Past is irrelevant: Meaning that people can forgiven for what they have done in the past. Past is what has passed already and doesn't determine you life as much as future and present would.
Nothing matters: This would mean that everything around, we shouldn't care about it since one day, sooner or later, it will all be gone.
Quotes:
1." I understood that the world was nothing: a mechanical chaos of casual, brute enmity on which we stupidly impose our hopes and fears." (pg. 21~22, Grendel)
- Grendel said this almost in the beginning part of the book, even before he heard dragon's idea. This quote is Grendel's point of view, which life is meaningless and there is nothing he can expect from it. The world is a place the stupid human assign their hope or fear to other things.
2. "I changed my mind. It would be meaningless, killing her. As meaningless as letting her live." (pg.110, Grendel)
- This is a quote that Grendel said when he caught a lady and was thinking about killing or not killing her. There's no difference whether her life is the world or not. Her existence doesn't mean anything to him or to anyone. *Existing in the world has no point and it doesn't matter. No one is able to do anything to save or help a person from dying, no one is immortal.*
3. "Poor Grendel's had an accident." I whisper. (pg174, Grendel)
- Grendel said this while he was dying. This quote shows the readers that the way he died was unpredictable. If Grendel had known that he was going to die, then he wouldn't have gone to meet Beowulf in the first place. *This quote also tells that the way people die is unplanned and no one knows when which individual is going to die. If anyone had the knowledge knowing when or where the people were going to die then there would be no more death but by aging.*
Opening Lawyer:
In defending the quote I present with a perspective on life that not only motivated Grendel's actions, but also the actions of others. As such, you will see he should not be blamed because of this quote, as they were merely in accordance with a social view of morality and ethics. “The world and everything in it is unplanned accident, existence is meaningless; the past is irrelevant; nothing matters.” The Grendel's fate on the world and all it encompasses. As fatalistic as it sounds, he is not the only one who believes this and acts in accordance to this point of view.
Let us begin by deconstructing the meaning behind this point of view. The quote means there is no higher being, no god, no omnipotent power that direct our thoughts and actions in one way or another. It means that all of us only came to exist upon mere chance. If one of us should die of some tragic accident today or tomorrow, it is not a punishment for past sins or intended end of life, but rather just a random occurrence. If Grendel knows he is going to be killed by Beowulf, he wouldn't have gone to meet Beowulf.
While attempting to join the humans, Grendel is continually rejected by them. The quote in the book on page 52 states, " I sank to my knees, crying, "Friend! Friend! They hacked at me, yipping like dogs. I held up the body for protection."
Grendel lives in a world in which his attempts at communication continually frustrated. His mother lacks capacity for language so he wouldn't be an intelligent conversational partner. Therefore, Grendel often shows himself talking to the sky or the air, which never hears the response. He feels so painful because of the unreachable distance to the human. Grendel is a monster, whose inner resembles humans, but outer appearance keep humans from being the companionship. Through the story he feels vanity, abandoned, and feels nothing is important. That is why Grendel's world is meaningless.
Letter reflection:
After I read the letter I had many ideas on what I could say for both opposition and the proposition. I learned the idea that the author himself had, also the way that the author wanted use the characters in this book. But at some parts it was kind of hard to understand because the author explained so much and it was hard for me to understand.
I also learned the importance of sharper in this book, since it was he who made everyone believe that the world had meaning. He was the person who was able to make people believe in the evil and good, and make Grendel confused about his life. I think that it wasn't only Grendel who was the main character but also the sharper since he was able to shape the view points of other human and even monster's mind.
